Gleaning Program

Reducing waste by redistributing unharvested food across the community.

Operated jointly by the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society and Nanaimo Foodshare Society, the Gleaning Program helps reduce food waste and redistribute food in our community by leveraging volunteers to harvest surplus fruit, vegetables and other crops that would otherwise go unpicked.

In addition to fruit trees, the Program has gleaned peas, blueberries, raspberries and corn.

In 2018, we had 93 volunteer gleaners who participated in 67 picks (284 volunteer hours) and collected 10,972 pounds of produce! The produce is shared three ways between the crop owner, the volunteers and community food programs. Numbers coming soon for 2019!
