Five Acre Community Park Tours

The City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Foodshare partner on an urban farm site in Nanaimo. Our programming provides ecological and food growing and cooking knowledge in our community.

You can find the Five Acre Community Park at 945 Park Ave. This land was the hunting grounds of the Snuneymuxw People. It is also one of the last intact five acre parcels of BC’s first planned (mining) agricultural community. Foodshare programs uses this land as an educational urban farm and community classroom.

We offer group tours of the Community Park and we want to introduce you to large scale food growing in Harewood! Get hands-on practice with food growing skills and fun ecological activities. Weekly, monthly, seasonal, and individual visits highlight the various cycles of growing.

Current Offerings:

Farmer Family Play Group

Inviting families to explore the farm together in a safe, fun and educational outdoor setting. Each session includes relaxed nature-based learning, games and a chance to harvest and take home seasonal farm produce. Bring a picnic lunch if you like.

The Five Acre Community Park Project includes:

Improve food security in Nanaimo and the region by growing more local food and teaching people the skills to grow food for themselves and others in the community; and
Increase employment and volunteer opportunities for those with disabilites, via our Cultivating Abilities program, Homegrown program, E.A.T (Everyone At the Table) program.

Nanaimo Foodshare partners with the City of Nanaimo to access this land to educate, grow and harvest around the produce grown.

Interested in Volunteering?

Please email info@nanaimofoodshare.ca if you would like to volunteer at the farm. A Criminal Record Check will be required for volunteering with youth programs.

Five Acre Park Update:

The City of Nanaimo hosted the Community Park collective visioning event in mid-Aug where neighbours and stakeholders discussed: Protection of the Natural Environment, Recreation, Food Security, Affordable Housing, Connectivity and Education as they could be incorporated on the entire Five Acres site (we currently farm on 0.7 of an Acre of the full parcel). The outcomes will be available at City of Nanaimo’s Park Avenue Park Concept Plan
