Since 2009, Nanaimo Foodshare has been offering the Farm to School program in a number of elementary schools within School District #68.  This all “You Can Eat” salad bar program is actively linking children in grades K – 12 to local farms.  This program is great for Hot Lunch programs.

One Goal

The Farm to School aims to improve the health of school aged children by increasing access to locally grown, nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate foods schools.

Four Objectives

  • To improve student nutrition
  • To increase learning opportunities from farm to fork
  • To support local farms and the local food economy
  • To promote a healthy environment

Our in-house red seal chef creates a fresh Farm to School “ALL YOU CAN EAT” salad bar and typically children have the opportunity to feast on a garden of fresh foods including 6 vegetables, 3 fruits, 1 protein and 1 grain. We also provide a fresh homemade soup with each salad bar.

The cost per child is currently $4.00 and includes the full meal and delivery.  We work closely with our local farmers to bring their produce into the schools, as well as having them as guest speakers in the classrooms.  We are excited to expand this valuable program into new schools.

For more information or to get your school involved please contact us to discuss the possibilities.

The concept is refreshingly simple! A relationship is developed between the school and at least one local farm. Foods from the farm are grown and harvested and served up in participating schools.

Why not consider a fresh “All You Can Eat” salad bar for your function…great for staff parties, meetings, conferences…you name it!
